Kamakura Day Trip from Tokyo 2026: Great Buddha
Kamakura is Tokyo’s seaside Kyoto: the Great Buddha for ¥300, temple hills, and a rattling coastal tram to an island shrine, one hour from the city, all-in day cost under ¥6,000.

The classic loop
Morning, Kamakura proper:
- Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, the town’s main shrine, free, straight up from the station
- Komachi-dori, the snack street; shirasu (whitebait) everything is the local bit
- Great Buddha (Kotoku-in), ¥300 + ¥50 to go inside the 13m bronze. Open-air since a 1498 tsunami took the hall.
- Hasedera (¥400), the hydrangea temple in June, bay views year-round
Afternoon, the Enoden tram. The green two-car line that hugs the coast, the Kamakurakokomae crossing is the anime shot everyone stops for. Ride it end to end.
Evening, Enoshima. Cross the causeway to the island: shrine stairs (escalator ¥360 if lazy), cliff-edge Chigogafuchi at sunset, and the Enoshima Aquarium ($13.89) back on the mainland side, the jellyfish hall ranks in our national top 10.
The pass math
| Option | Price | Covers |
|---|---|---|
| JR round trip only | ~¥1,900 | Tokyo ⇄ Kamakura |
| Enoden day pass (Noriorikun) | ¥800 | Tram only |
| Odakyu Freepass (from Shinjuku) | ¥1,640 | RT + all Enoden |
From Shinjuku, the Odakyu Freepass is the obvious buy, it undercuts the plain JR round trip before counting tram rides. From east-side Tokyo, JR + the ¥800 tram pass wins. Either way, Suica covers the gaps.
Day budget

| Snack-street grazing | ¥800 |
| Day total | ~¥5,000 ($33) |
