Beppu & Yufuin Guide 2026: Kyushu's Onsen Towns

Beppu pumps more hot water than anywhere in Japan and charges ¥300 to soak in it; Yufuin is its stylish little sister an hour over the hill. Together they’re the onsen leg of any Kyushu route, and the reason the Kyushu rail pass earns its price.

Beppu: volume and hells

The public baths are the point: Takegawara (1879, ¥300) and dozens of neighborhood sento where ¥300–500 buys the real thing. The day-use trick from Noboribetsu applies here at a third the price.

The seven hells (jigoku), viewing springs in surreal colors:

Cost
Single hell¥450
Seven-hell combo¥2,200

Honest read: Umi Jigoku (cobalt) and Chinoike Jigoku (blood red) deliver 80% of the value. ¥900 beats ¥2,200 unless you’re a completist.

The sand bath (Beppu Beach, ~¥1,500): buried to the neck in steam-heated sand. Once. It’s great once.

Yufuin: the pretty one

One walkable street from the station to Lake Kinrin under Mt Yufu: craft shops, honey-castella stalls, galleries, and cafes. The lake steams on cold mornings, the photo. Day-use baths at ryokan run ¥600–1,000.

Yufuin is a half-day as a visitor and a splurge overnight as a ryokan guest, the one-ryokan-night rule fits here or Kinosaki, not both.

The Kyushu logistics

Base the trip on Fukuoka, cheapest beds in the region and the yatai dinner on return.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Beppu and Yufuin?

Beppu is the working onsen city: biggest hot-spring output in Japan, retro arcades, ¥300 public baths, and the touristy-but-fun seven hells. Yufuin is the boutique village: craft shops, cafes, and stylish ryokan under Mount Yufu. Do Beppu for volume and price, Yufuin for atmosphere.

How much are the Beppu hells?

¥450 per hell or ¥2,200 for the seven-hell combo ticket. They are viewing springs, not bathing springs, bright cobalt, blood-red, and geyser pools. Two or three individual hells satisfy most visitors without the full combo.

What is a sand bath?

You lie in a yukata while staff bury you to the neck in naturally steam-heated black sand for 10 to 15 minutes. Beppu Beach Sand Bath charges about ¥1,500, sweaty, strange, and worth doing once.

How do you get to Beppu and Yufuin?

From Fukuoka: the Sonic limited express to Beppu (2 hours) or the scenic Yufuin no Mori to Yufuin (2.2 hours), both covered by the JR Kyushu Rail Pass. The two towns connect by local train or bus in about an hour.
