Nikko Day Trip from Tokyo 2026: Toshogu & Falls
Nikko is Tokyo’s mountain-shrine day trip: the shogun Ieyasu’s gilded mausoleum in a cedar forest, plus waterfalls and a lake one switchback road up. The whole thing runs on one private rail line with honest pass math.
Verified: July 3, 2026. Season: Summer (Heat & Festivals).
The two zones (pick one per day)
Zone 1, the shrines (lower town):
- Toshogu (¥1,600), the shogun’s mausoleum: gold, carvings (the sleeping cat, the three monkeys), and forest. Japan’s maximalist answer to Kyoto’s restraint.
- Rinnoji & Futarasan (¥400–900 each, grounds partly free)
- Shinkyo bridge, the red bridge photo, free from the road
- Kanmangafuchi abyss, riverside jizo statue row, free, 20 minutes from the crowds and better than half the paid stops
Zone 2, the highlands (Okunikko):
- Bus up the Irohazaka switchbacks (covered by the wider pass) to Kegon Falls (¥600 elevator to the base viewing deck, top deck free), Lake Chuzenji, and Senjogahara marsh walks.
Day-trippers: shrines + Kanmangafuchi. Foliage season or hikers: overnight and do both.
Getting there: the Tobu pass table
From Asakusa (Tobu line):
| Option | Price | Covers |
|---|---|---|
| Plain express RT | ~¥2,800 | Trains only |
| Nikko City Pass | ~¥2,120 + express surcharge | RT + town buses |
| All Nikko Pass | ~¥4,780 | RT + highland buses |
Shrine-zone day: City Pass. Kegon Falls plans: All Nikko Pass, the highland bus alone runs ¥1,250 each way. JR Pass holders: the JR-Tobu through service works but the nationwide pass rarely justifies itself for this.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you get from Tokyo to Nikko?
Tobu line from Asakusa is the budget route: about ¥1,400 each way on express trains, 2 hours. Tobu's Nikko passes bundle the round trip with local buses from around ¥2,120 to ¥4,780 depending on coverage area. JR routes cost more unless you hold a JR pass.
Is Nikko worth a day trip?
Yes for the Toshogu shrine complex alone, Japan's most lavish shrine. One day covers Toshogu plus either the Shinkyo bridge area or the Kegon Falls loop. Doing both zones comfortably needs an overnight.
How much does Toshogu shrine cost?
¥1,600 for the main shrine. The five-storey pagoda exterior, Shinkyo bridge views, and Rinnoji temple grounds around it are free or cheap, so a tight budget still gets a full Nikko day.
When is the best time to visit Nikko?
Mid-October to early November for autumn foliage, also the most crowded window, especially the Irohazaka switchback road. June's fresh green and hydrangeas is the quiet-and-beautiful alternative.
