The Complete First-Timer's Travel Guide to Vietnam

The Complete First-Timer's Travel Guide to Vietnam

Vietnam runs nearly 1,650km north to south, so the first real decision isn’t what to see, it’s what order to see it in. Get the route direction wrong and you’ll spend your trip backtracking instead of moving forward.

Which direction should you travel?

Start wherever your flight lands and move in one direction, don’t loop back. Two workable routes:

Either direction works equally well. What doesn’t work: flying into Hanoi, doing the north, flying to Ho Chi Minh City, then flying back up for something you skipped. Book an open-jaw ticket (into one city, out of the other) and the whole trip flows one way.

How long do you actually need?

Trip lengthRealistic itinerary
7 daysPick one region only: north (Hanoi + Ha Long Bay + Sapa) or south (Ho Chi Minh City + Mekong Delta)
10 daysNorth + central: Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Hoi An, Da Nang
14 daysFull route: Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Hue, Hoi An, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City
21 daysFull route plus Sapa trekking and Phu Quoc beach time

Verdict: under 10 days, don’t try to do the whole country. Vietnam rewards slower travel, especially in Hoi An and Sapa, where the appeal is walking pace, not checklist pace.

What should be on the list?

The seven stops that consistently earn their place on a first itinerary:

Where should you base yourself in each city?

CityBest baseWhy
HanoiOld QuarterMost atmospheric and walkable, also the loudest given motorbike traffic
Ho Chi Minh CityDistrict 1Central, easy access to Bui Vien street and the rest of the city
Hoi AnAncient Town or An Bang BeachOld town for lantern-lit evenings, An Bang for a quieter stay
Da NangBeach stripModern resort base, works for both Hoi An and Ba Na Hills day trips
SapaSapa townLaunch point for trekking routes, mountain views from most hotels

How do you actually get around?

The Reunification Express sleeper train runs the full Hanoi-to-Ho Chi Minh City route, stopping at Hue, Da Nang, and Nha Trang along the way. It’s slower than flying but scenic, worth doing for one or two legs rather than the whole route unless you have time to spare.

Within cities, Grab (car and motorbike) has become the easier, no-negotiation option for short trips, no haggling, fare shown upfront. Motorbike rental is still the classic way to move through cities and countryside alike if you’re comfortable riding one. Open-tour buses connect the main tourist stops cheaply for anyone who’d rather not drive at all.

Verdict: fly the long hops (Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City), train the scenic middle stretch (Hue to Da Nang), Grab everything within a city.

When should you go, and does it matter which region?

Vietnam’s length means two climates at once, so “best time to visit” depends entirely on where you’re headed:

If your route covers all three regions, aim for a window in February or March, the closest thing to a shared dry season across Vietnam. Central Vietnam in October or November is the one stretch to actively route around.

What should you pack?

Vietnam’s climate range, tropical south, mountain-cool north, means a single packing list rarely covers the whole trip. Check the full breakdown in the Vietnam packing checklist before you leave, it accounts for the Sapa cold and the Mekong heat in the same bag.

What do most first-timers get wrong?

Backtracking is the biggest one, already covered above, but three smaller mistakes repeat often enough to flag directly:

Verdict: the route matters more than the checklist. A shorter list done at the right pace beats a long list rushed.

Where to next

Once the route and dates are set, the next planning layer is what to actually do at each stop. Frequently Asked Questions

Should I fly into Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City?

Pick based on your route direction, not the flight price. Fly into Hanoi and out of Ho Chi Minh City (or reverse) so you never backtrack, open-jaw tickets cost about the same as round trips on most routes.

How many days do you need for a first Vietnam trip?

14 days covers Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Hoi An or Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City without rushing. Under 10 days, pick north or south and go deep instead of skimming both.

Is it better to fly or take the train between cities?

Fly for long hops (Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City), train for scenic middle stretches (Hue to Da Nang). The Reunification Express covers the whole route if you have time to spare, but flying saves a full day on the long legs.

Do I need a motorbike to get around Vietnam?

No. Grab covers cities well and open-tour buses connect the tourist circuit cheaply. Rent a motorbike only if you're comfortable riding one and want countryside access outside the main towns.
