The DIY stack: pass + shrine ticket
The ¥2,991 ($18.49) NIKKO PASS (digital version, no counter exchange) plus online Toshogu admission (¥1,602 ($9.90)) = the whole shrine-zone day for ~¥4,530 ($28), queue-skipped. In November foliage season the skipped ticket window alone is worth the online booking, the crowd-clock rules apply here hardest.
Highland plans (Kegon Falls, Lake Chuzenji): the wider All Nikko Pass at the Tobu counter, or the tour below.
The tour case, honestly
DIY runs ~¥7,000 all-in; the ¥9,512 ($58.79) tour covers shrine AND falls with zero transfers. The usual test says DIY, Nikko’s transit works. The exception: October–November, when the Irohazaka switchback buses jam for hours and a tour’s fixed seating beats standing-room locals’ buses. Foliage-season one-shotters, take the tour; everyone else, the pass.
The second-day oddities
Tobu World Square (¥1,406 ($8.69)), 100+ world landmarks at 1:25 scale, one stop from Kinugawa Onsen: the pyramids, Sagrada Familia, and a scale Skytree next to actual mountains. Deeply Japanese roadside-attraction energy; kids and photographers thrive. Pairs with a Kinugawa onsen overnight for the Nikko two-day version, the day-use bath rules work there too.
Private tea ceremony and kimono experience (Viator, ¥10,254 ($63.38), 16 reviews) is a quieter add-on if the shrine crowds are the part of Nikko you want a break from.
Final thoughts
Book the digital pass + shrine ticket the night before, gates at 8 AM, Kanmangafuchi after lunch, ¥4,530 ($28) for the shogun’s gold. Full route detail: the Nikko day-trip guide. Want private and guided instead of DIY tickets? GetYourGuide’s Nikko full-day private tour runs ¥47,260 ($292.11) with 239 reviews.

What does the NIKKO PASS include?
The Tobu round trip from Asakusa plus unlimited local buses in the covered zone, the digital version books online at ¥2,991 ($18.49). The wider All Nikko version adds the highland buses to Kegon Falls and Lake Chuzenji.
Can you buy Toshogu Shrine tickets online?
Yes, ¥1,602 ($9.90) online admission skips the shrine's ticket-window queue, which matters in autumn foliage season when windows run 20-plus minutes. Gate price is similar; the win is the skipped line.
Is the Nikko bus tour from Tokyo worth it?
At ¥9,512 ($58.79) to ¥12,149 ($75.09) versus roughly ¥7,000 DIY, the tours buy zero-transfer convenience covering both the shrine and Kegon Falls in one day. Worth it for one-shot visitors in foliage season; the DIY pass wins otherwise.
What is Tobu World Square?
A park of 1:25-scale world landmarks, 100-plus miniatures from the pyramids to Tokyo Skytree, one stop from Kinugawa Onsen, ¥1,406 ($8.69) online. Kids and photographers get their money's worth; it pairs with a Nikko second day.
