JR Hokkaido Rail Pass vs Furano Pass 2026
Hokkaido is twice the size of the rest of Japan’s tourist map and its train fares scale accordingly, Sapporo to Hakodate costs ¥18,000 round trip at window prices. Two passes fix this, and they cover different Hokkaidos.
The math on both. Verified: July 3, 2026. Season now: Summer (Heat & Festivals).
The two passes
| JR Hokkaido Pass | Sapporo-Furano Pass | |
|---|---|---|
| Price (from) | $61.59 | $67.75 (4-day) |
| Coverage | All JR Hokkaido | Sapporo–Otaru–Furano–Biei–Asahikawa corridor |
| Hakodate | Yes | No |
| Best for | Island-crossing routes | Lavender season, central circuit |
Counterintuitive: the smaller pass costs more. It exists for the Furano corridor in peak seasons when that’s exactly where everyone goes.
Break-even math, full Hokkaido pass
Regular fares from Sapporo (approx., limited express):
| Route | Round trip |
|---|---|
| Sapporo ⇄ Hakodate | ~¥18,000 |
| Sapporo ⇄ Asahikawa | ~¥10,000 |
| Sapporo ⇄ Otaru | ~¥1,500 |
The full pass (~¥9,500 equivalent) pays for itself with one Hakodate round trip, everything after is free travel. Even Sapporo ⇄ Asahikawa alone gets you to break-even.
When the Sapporo-Furano pass wins
Mid-June to early August (lavender) and ski season, when your whole trip is the central corridor:
Sapporo → Otaru day trip → Furano/Biei two days → Asahikawa (zoo) → Sapporo. Individual fares for that loop: ~¥12,000+. The 4-day pass: $67.75. It also includes some bus segments around Furano-Biei the full JR pass doesn’t.
Not going to Hakodate? This is your pass. Going to Hakodate? Full pass, no contest.
Sapporo-only trips: no pass
Sapporo city runs on subway (¥250–290/ride) and your Suica/ICOCA works here too. Odori Park, Susukino, the beer museum, Nijo Market, all walkable or one subway hop. Day-trip to Otaru is ¥1,500 round trip; no pass justifies itself on that alone.
Getting to Hokkaido on a budget
- Fly. Tokyo→Sapporo (New Chitose) on Peach/Jetstar runs ¥6,000–15,000 booked early, cheaper and 6 hours faster than shinkansen.
- Shinkansen option: only reaches Hakodate (4h from Tokyo, ~¥23,000); if you insist on rail, the Hokuriku Arch and other regional passes don’t help here, the full JR East-South Hokkaido pass territory is a separate product.
- New Chitose Airport→Sapporo: JR rapid, ¥1,150, 37 min, covered by both passes above.
Sample 5-day winter budget
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Hokkaido Rail Pass | ¥9,500 |
| Hostels × 4 (Sapporo/Hakodate) | ¥14,000 |
| Food (soup curry + konbini) | ¥11,000 |
| Onsen entries × 2 | ¥1,600 |
| Total ex-flights | ~¥36,000 ($240) |
Final thoughts
Decision tree: Hakodate on the route → full Hokkaido pass. Lavender/ski corridor only → Sapporo-Furano. Sapporo only → Suica and a beer with the savings.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the JR Hokkaido Rail Pass worth it?
Yes if you visit two or more cities beyond Sapporo. The Sapporo to Hakodate round trip alone costs about ¥18,000 in regular fares, more than the roughly ¥9,500 pass price. Staying only in Sapporo, skip every pass.
What is the difference between the Hokkaido Pass and the Sapporo-Furano Pass?
The full Hokkaido pass covers all JR Hokkaido lines including Hakodate and Asahikawa. The Sapporo-Furano pass covers only the central corridor: Sapporo, Otaru, Furano, Biei, and Asahikawa. Buy Sapporo-Furano for lavender season or central ski trips, the full pass for island-wide routes.
Do I need a rental car in Hokkaido instead?
For Furano-Biei back roads and remote onsen, a car wins in summer. In winter, take the train, Hokkaido driving in snow is not a tourist activity. Trains also beat the car on Sapporo-Hakodate distance.
When is lavender season in Furano?
Mid-July is peak, with fields colorful from late June to early August. Book Sapporo accommodation weeks ahead for this window and expect the Furano Lavender Express trains to fill.
