Hiroshima on a Budget 2026: Peace Park & Miyajima
Hiroshima runs the cheapest sightseeing economics in Japan: the most important museum in the country costs $1.25, the Peace Park is free, and the famous island next door is a ¥200 ferry. Budget travel here isn’t a compromise, it’s how the city designed itself.
Prices verified: July 3, 2026.
The Peace Park half-day (nearly free)
- Peace Memorial Museum ($1.25). Ninety minutes, phone away. Book the timed slot online in peak season, the queue is the only expensive thing about it.
- A-Bomb Dome, Cenotaph, Children’s Peace Monument, free, and the park works as one continuous route from the museum.
- Orizuru Tower ($14.25), the rooftop overlooking the Dome; fold a paper crane and drop it into the glass wall. The one paid viewpoint that adds to the morning rather than repeating it.
Lunch: Okonomimura, a building of 20+ okonomiyaki counters, Hiroshima-style (with noodles), ¥900–1,300.
Miyajima: the afternoon
Tram/JR to Miyajimaguchi (~30 min) + ferry (¥200, 10 min):
- Itsukushima floating torii, free, best at high tide and sunset (check the tide table; low tide lets you walk to it, differently good)
- Itsukushima Shrine (¥300)
- Momiji manju (maple cakes, ¥100 fresh off the machines) and deliberately casual deer
- Mt Misen ropeway (¥2,000 RT), skip on a one-day run; hike it (2h) on a two-day trip
Ferry note: JR’s ferry is covered by JR passes, including the Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass, which is also the cheapest way to get here from Osaka in the first place.
The pass math
| Option | Price | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Have Fun in Hiroshima Pass | $21.69 | 2–3 pick-list stops = break-even |
| Klook Pass Hiroshima | $20.29 | Similar bundle, compare inclusion lists |
| Pay per attraction | , | Wins for museum-and-Miyajima-only days |
The honest read: a museum + Miyajima day needs no pass at all (~¥1,000 of entries total). Passes earn their price on day two, Orizuru, kagura theater ($11.15, masked demon-dance performances, criminally undervisited), and the cat cafe if that’s your speed. See the Have Fun pass explainer for how these bundles work.

- Day 2 bolt-on: Onomichi’s Mt Senkoji Ropeway ($1.55) and the temple walk, en route east.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum cost?
About ¥200 ($1.25), deliberately kept near-free so everyone can visit. Plan 90 quiet minutes; the surrounding Peace Park, A-Bomb Dome, and Children's Peace Monument are all free.
Is one day enough for Hiroshima and Miyajima?
Yes with an early start: Peace Park and museum in the morning, tram and ferry to Miyajima after lunch, floating torii at sunset. Two days lets you add Okonomimura and Mt Misen properly.
How do you get to Miyajima?
Tram or JR line to Miyajimaguchi (about 30 minutes from central Hiroshima), then the 10-minute ferry (¥200; the JR ferry is covered by JR passes). The torii gate is a 10-minute walk from the pier.
Is the Have Fun in Hiroshima Pass worth it?
At $21.69 for a pick-list of attractions, it pays off with two or three included stops like Orizuru Tower and a kagura performance. Check the current inclusion list, museum entry at $1.25 you just pay directly.
