How does this JR Pass calculator work?

Add your intercity train legs. The calculator totals the regular ticket fares, then checks every pass against your route: pass price plus fares for any legs it does not cover. It recommends whichever combination costs least.

Fares are typical unreserved one-way prices, accurate to within a few hundred yen. Pass prices are converted from current online prices and rounded. Treat results within 10 percent as a tie and pick the flexible option.

Why does the nationwide JR Pass rarely win?

Accepted Answer

Since the October 2023 price increase to about ¥50,000 for 7 days, a typical Golden Route itinerary uses only ¥15,000 to ¥20,000 of trains. The nationwide pass needs roughly ¥50,000 of shinkansen travel inside 7 days to break even, which few itineraries reach.
