Kanazawa Travel Guide 2026: Kenrokuen & Gold Leaf

Kanazawa is Kyoto without the crush: a top-three garden, intact geisha and samurai districts, a working seafood market, and entry fees that top out at ¥700. It’s also the whole argument for taking the Hokuriku Arch route between Tokyo and Osaka.

Verified: July 3, 2026. Season: Summer (Heat & Festivals).

The one-day circuit

Morning, Omicho Market. Kanazawa’s kitchen since 1721. Kaisendon breakfast ¥1,500–2,500; the nodoguro (blackthroat perch) is the local flex.

Late morning, Kenrokuen (¥320). One of Japan’s three great gardens and arguably the best of them; each season is a different garden (Summer (Heat & Festivals) now). Adjacent Kanazawa Castle park is free.

Afternoon, Higashi Chaya district. The geisha quarter: wooden teahouse streets, gold-leaf everything (Kanazawa produces 99% of Japan’s gold leaf). The gold-leaf soft cream (¥900) is the tourist tax everyone pays happily. Free to walk; one teahouse interior (Shima, ¥500) is worth entering.

Late afternoon, Nagamachi samurai district. Earthen walls, canals, the Nomura house (¥550). Quieter than everything above.

If it rains: the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art (free zones + ¥450–1,200 exhibitions), the pool illusion piece is the famous one.

Getting there: the Arch Pass logic

Kanazawa is the centerpiece of the JR Hokuriku Arch Pass ($185.80, 7 days): Tokyo → Kanazawa → Osaka, the scenic land route. Our pass math says it beats point-to-point tickets only if you actually stop, Kanazawa plus one more Hokuriku stop (Toyama or Fukui) clears the bar.

One-city visits: plain shinkansen tickets, no pass.

Day budget

Final thoughts

Kanazawa delivers Kyoto’s greatest-hits categories at 2019 prices and 2005 crowds. Route it as the Tokyo→Osaka scenic leg and give it one full day minimum. Browse Kanazawa bookings for workshops and passes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Kanazawa worth visiting?

Yes, it is the Kyoto experience (gardens, geisha district, samurai quarter, crafts) at a third of the crowds. Kenrokuen alone, one of Japan's three great gardens, justifies the stop at ¥320 entry.

How many days do you need in Kanazawa?

One full day covers Kenrokuen, Higashi Chaya, the samurai district, and Omicho Market at a comfortable pace. Two days adds the 21st Century Museum and a gold-leaf workshop.

How do you get to Kanazawa?

Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo (about 2.5 hours, ¥14,000) or limited express connections from Osaka/Kyoto. It is the flagship stop on the Hokuriku Arch Pass route between Tokyo and Osaka.
