Japan Entry Requirements 2026: Visit Japan Web & Customs

Visit Japan Web is the pre-arrival system most travelers should use, not because it’s required, but because skipping it means standing in a slower paper-form line for no benefit.
Verified: July 13, 2026.
What Visit Japan Web actually is
An online platform run by Japan’s Digital Agency that lets you pre-fill your immigration arrival card and customs declaration before you fly. Once submitted, it generates QR codes that replace the paper forms most travelers used to fill out on the plane.
Three separate QR codes come out of the process: one for immigration (replacing the paper arrival/disembarkation card), one for customs (replacing the paper declaration scanned at the automated gate), and one for duty-free purchase tracking.
The 2026 change: Joint Kiosks
Haneda, Narita, and Kansai airports rolled out Joint Kiosk machines in 2026: scan your passport and one QR code at a single machine, and it handles both immigration entry and customs declaration in one step, instead of two separate lines and two separate scans. This is the single biggest time-saver added to the system this year.
How to actually use it
- Register at services.digital.go.jp/en/visit-japan-web up to two weeks before your flight.
- Complete both sections, immigration AND customs. This is the most commonly missed step, and skipping customs invalidates the QR code for entry purposes even if immigration is done.
- Register at least 6 hours before arrival to guarantee your codes are generated and ready.
- Screenshot your QR codes before boarding. Airport wifi and cellular signal on arrival aren’t guaranteed to be instant, have the codes saved locally, not dependent on loading the app fresh.
- At the airport, use the Joint Kiosk if your arrival airport has one (Haneda, Narita, Kansai), scan passport and QR code together.
It’s optional, not mandatory
You can skip Visit Japan Web entirely and fill out paper forms by hand on arrival, exactly as travelers did for decades before this system existed. Nobody is turned away or penalized for not registering. The only cost is time, the e-gate queue at Haneda during peak hours runs 5-15 minutes; the paper-form line typically runs longer.
What Visit Japan Web does NOT replace
Your visa (or visa-exemption eligibility) is checked separately at the immigration counter, Visit Japan Web has nothing to do with visa status itself, check our full visa requirements breakdown for that. Visit Japan Web only replaces the paperwork you’d otherwise fill out by hand.
Final thoughts
Register on Visit Japan Web two weeks out, complete both sections, screenshot your codes, and use the Joint Kiosk if your arrival airport has one. It’s optional but genuinely saves time, and there’s no downside to using it beyond the ten minutes of setup. Pair this with our visa requirements guide and first-timer mistakes to avoid for the full pre-flight checklist.

Is Visit Japan Web mandatory to enter Japan?
No, it's optional. You can still fill out paper immigration and customs forms on arrival, and you won't be turned away or penalized for skipping it. It exists purely to save time at the airport.
When should I register on Visit Japan Web?
Up to two weeks before your flight, and at least 6 hours before arrival to guarantee your QR codes are ready. Complete both the immigration and customs sections, skipping customs is the most common mistake and invalidates the QR code for entry.
What is the Joint Kiosk system?
A 2026 rollout at Haneda, Narita, and Kansai airports that scans your passport and QR code together in a single machine, handling both immigration entry and customs declaration in one step instead of two separate lines.
Do I need Visit Japan Web if I already have a visa?
Yes, it's separate from your visa. Visit Japan Web replaces the paper arrival card and customs form; your visa (or visa-exemption status) is a completely separate requirement checked at the immigration counter itself.
