Taiwan Travel Guide

HSR pass math and night-market budgets, coming soon.

Taiwan runs one of Asia's most efficient rail systems end to end, which makes it an easy place to build an honest budget around, if you know which pass actually pays for itself. We're bringing the same real-price approach here next: HSR fares, night-market food costs, and EasyCard math for Taipei, Kaohsiung, and the east coast.

Top Things to Do in Taiwan

  • Taipei 101: The observation deck offers city-wide views, and the surrounding Xinyi district is Taipei's main upscale shopping area.
  • Shilin & Raohe night markets: Taipei's two most-visited night markets, dense with street food stalls, games, and local snacks.
  • Taroko Gorge: Marble canyon trails on the east coast near Hualien, one of Taiwan's most dramatic natural landmarks.
  • Sun Moon Lake: A mountain lake in central Taiwan with a cable car, cycling paths, and boat crossings.
  • Jiufen Old Street: A hillside town of lantern-lit teahouses and narrow alleys, often visited as a half-day trip from Taipei.
  • Beitou hot springs: Natural hot spring baths inside Taipei's own metro system, no long trip required.
  • Alishan sunrise train: A narrow-gauge mountain railway timed for sunrise views above the clouds.

Where to Stay: Best Areas & Hotels

  • Ximending, Taipei: Taipei's youth-culture shopping district, dense with budget hotels and street food.
  • Zhongshan, Taipei: Central and well-connected by MRT, a common base for first-time visitors.
  • Kaohsiung: Taiwan's southern port city, more laid-back and less expensive than Taipei.
  • Tainan Old Town: Taiwan's oldest city, best for temple-hopping and some of the country's best street food.
  • Hualien: The base for Taroko Gorge day trips on the east coast.

Top Destinations & Cities to Visit

  • Taipei: The capital and usual first stop, night markets, temples, and the 101 tower.
  • Kaohsiung: The south's main city, with a growing waterfront and light rail system.
  • Tainan: Taiwan's cultural and culinary heart, dense with temples and centuries-old street food stalls.
  • Hualien & Taroko Gorge: The east coast's main draw, reached by train through mountain tunnels.
  • Sun Moon Lake, Nantou: The central-Taiwan lake district, popular for cycling and cable cars.
  • Kenting: Taiwan's southern beach town, the closest thing the island has to a tropical resort strip.

Transportation & Passes

An EasyCard covers the Taipei MRT, city buses, YouBike rentals, and even convenience-store purchases nationwide. The High Speed Rail (HSR) connects Taipei to Kaohsiung in under two hours and is the fastest way to cover the west coast, while the slower conventional rail line loops around to Hualien and the east coast, where the HSR doesn't reach.

Best Time to Visit: Seasonal Guide

Spring and autumn (March to May, October to November) bring mild, comfortable weather and are the best windows to visit. Summer (June to September) is hot and humid with real typhoon risk, especially for east-coast and outer-island plans, while winter stays mild in the south but noticeably cooler and rainier in Taipei and the north.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time to visit Taiwan?

March to May or October to November, avoiding both summer typhoon season and the cooler, rainier northern winter.

Is the HSR worth it in Taiwan?

Yes for Taipei-Kaohsiung and other west-coast routes; the east coast (Hualien, Taitung) uses the slower conventional rail line instead.

How many days do you need in Taiwan?

A week covers Taipei plus one side trip (Sun Moon Lake or Hualien); ten days lets you add Tainan or Kaohsiung in the south.

Is Taiwan good for solo budget travel?

Yes, it has an efficient rail network, widespread English signage, and some of the region's best-value night-market food.

Do you need cash in Taiwan?

Less than you'd expect, EasyCard and mobile payment cover transit and many shops, though small night-market stalls often still prefer cash.
